In this new ‘ non-collaboration’ project, Katrina will create a solo film work that builds on her on-going interest in the fluid potential of the embodied camera, and reflects a tested tradition of women artists featuring their own bodies – and stories – in their screen-based work. In I Am Stronger, Katrina will draw on a story which she believes has wider interest and which she plans to research and develop during a series of artist residencies at Dance Base, Edinburgh, and during filming residencies in North East Scotland during Winter, 2019.
Based on photographs of Katrina’s German maternal grandmother Luise Langenheim geb. Kruger - a war refugee mother-of two who died in 1946 by drowning herself – the artist will create an original single screen dance work, performing for the camera a choreography of gestures, stances, and imagined movements – forming a kind of ‘embodied DNA’ – that pose questions of identity, physical and emotional legacy.
Katrina received funding from Creative Scotland’s Open Project Fund, along with in-kind and financial support from Dance North and Dance Base to develop this work, which will be presented as a work-in-progress at Dance Base and Dance North during late 2019/ early 2020.
